Prairie Progress

This is year 3 of our prairie creation project. It's supposed to be a minimum of a 5 year process, but finally we are starting to see progress. Last night I went out to the prairie to see lots of new variety!

Landscaping

I spent the day today planting (about 4 or so hours of work!). These are two of the beds - we've now got something other than just brown mulch in them! Thanks to friends and family, we didn't have to purchase any of this - these are all things we were able to dig up from other people's gardens.

This area is a mix of grasses, prairie wildflowers (like coneflowers and black-eyed susans) and a few other blooming plants.

This bed is almost all daylilies, most of them we kept from our old house and stored them in Mom and Dad's garden over the last year. A few are new.

Tucked in the corner of the bed above is another grass.

What I didn't take pictures of are the beds that run the entire length of the house on the north side (all shady and still very much a work in progress) and the rear of the house (completely empty).

I love spring so much!

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes...

Well, it's been exactly 7 days since we moved into our new house. Finally I feel like I can sit down and be on the Internet for more than 2 minutes...and finally it is starting to feel like home.

We love the new house. So far there is nothing that I don't like about it. I'm sure I will find something eventually, but in the first 7 days, nothing.

Both boys have settled in very easily to the new routine (or maybe just to any routine, the last few weeks before moving were CRAZY). Nile in particular has really adjusted well. We made the executive decision not to set up the crib in his new room.

Last week, before moving, we thought we might be able to find a twin size bed frame for him. Six, maybe seven, stores later, we did not find one which we liked. It's amazing how many bunk beds these stores sell. I mean, honestly? And to get away from the white "princess" beds to get a brown wood bed frame was pushing $700 or more at most stores.

So, needless to say, we don't have a bed frame for Nile. But, we do have a mattress. So, Nile has been sleeping on a mattress on the floor for a week. Without drama. Yes, my child...the overly dramatic one...has been waking up happy! (Flashback to just a few weeks ago) And so far, unlike his brother, he actually STAYS in bed once we put him down. I'm sure this part won't last, but it's wonderful right now.

I've been hoping to get a photo of him in his bed sleeping, but with the room darkening blinds it's just way too dark for a photo. And he has no desire to pose for me right now. So...maybe later.

In one week...

We will go from this...

Did I mention we're ready to move?

warning: bulldozers work very quickly!

Today we went over to check on our house, and to show Tom's mom the progress.

Last year a big storm came through the area and had really damaged the trees on our lot. We had looked at it several months ago and we had agreed that many of the trees needed to come down. I think there was some miscommunication on how many trees we wanted to remove, though. Because today when we got there, ALL the trees were gone. Our 1/2 acre of forest, gone. Completely razed to the ground, burned, and buried. There was literally nothing left. All this in just two short days. Needless to say, I was really disappointed. For the last year I have imagined roaming that little plot of forest with the boys, showing them wildflowers, and exploring it all. Now we will not have that chance. We do have a nice view of the wetland behind our yard, and there are still trees on our neighbor's lot, but ours is completely clear.

Tom and I have no desire to have a huge acre of flat green grass. That's actually the last thing I wanted. So we are probably going to embark on a project to restore prairie grass to our property. Maybe then I can at least get some of the wildflowers I wanted (even if they are prairie wildflowers instead). I have to look at the bright side and make this an opportunity, because I love our house and I want this to be our "dream" - at least as close as we can get.

On the plus side, the boys enjoyed watching the bulldozer level what remains. I got a few pictures with my cell phone of them enjoying the show. You can enjoy the "carnage" too!

(Note: We had woods up to within 5 feet of the house)

4 months of entertainment

We broke ground on our new home this week. So far we've been over there every day to check out the site and see what progress has been made. The boys have been LOVING seeing the construction equipment and the "really huge hole" in the ground. I think we've found a new recreational activity.

I almost titled this post "free entertainment" but then realized that this is definitely not free.
